It’s been two months since Google first told us they want to add a Meet tab to Gmail on Android. This new tab would be the first step towards a future of Gmail with all kinds of new tabs, including Chat. Google has this vision for the future of Gmail that includes a bunch of inflated other apps, in the hope that you can do it all in Gmail instead of managing all these separate experiences.
Yesterday, Google Meet started making its debut in Gmail on Android.
Once your account has been accessed (only 1 of me has it), you will notice it because it cannot. At the bottom of the screen you now have a new bottom bar with “Mail” and “Meet” tabs. If you hit both, jump from Gmail to Meet and back again.
The new Meet tab is there to help you quickly and easily attend meetings, set up new, that sort of thing. Assuming you use Gmail for all your work needs and are forced into a lifetime of video calling, this can come in handy! If that is not your life, then you can put it off and probably have to.
Turn on Google Meet in Gmail
Should you see that Meet tab, think it takes up too much space, are at no point outside a virtual happy hour connected to a video call, and if you want to turn it off, then you are doing just that.
- Open Gmail
- Open the side menu, scroll to the bottom, tap Settings
- Tap on the Gmail address / account where you want Meet to go
- Scroll down to a new “Meet” section
- Look for the “Show Measure for Video Call” tab
- Explore that box
- Gmail needs to reload and Meet will be gone
We still do not know when the shortcuts to Chat and Rooms will meet at Meet, but we should all pray that Google adds these same checkboxes to disable them as well. I can not imagine that everyone will be excited about the integration.
