3:43 a.m .: Torres is likely to undergo an MRI, although manager Aaron Boone does not believe the injury is serious, Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News relays (Twitter links).
14:30 hours: The Yankees announced that shortstop Gleyber Torres left her game against the Rays on Thursday with a tight left hamstring. He is being evaluated.
It is too early to say how serious this injury is, although instruments of hamstring often lead to fairly long deviations. That would be a particularly difficult development for a Yankees team whose offense is already shorthanded. Torres’ doubles partner, second baseman DJ LeMahieu, has been out with a thumb injury since last weekend, and he will not return for at least a few weeks. Slipping field players Aaron Judge (calf) and Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring) have also been sitting outside for about half of August, although the former could return in the coming days.
Torres did not start with the productive starts that LeMahieu, Judge and Stanton had, as he played just .231 / .341 / .295 with one home game in 91 record appearances. That’s very disappointing of someone who mased 38 homers during an All-Star 2019. However, there is no debate about the 23-year-old being an integral part of her roster and someone far more qualified than the rest of the shortstops the Yankees have had.
After Torres fell down, the club subbed Thairo Estrada in second place and shifted Tyler Wade from the keystone to short. Notably, the Yankees have just signed veterans mid-infusion Jordy Mercer, who they can call if Torres misses the time.
