Giants training camp, 8/24: Practice report – Broad receiver Darius Slayton is out

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – The New York Giants held a Marathon 2½-hur practice in temperatures of 90 degrees on Monday, their longest practice of training camp 2020 to date.

  • Broad receiver Darius Slayton did not practice, and head coach Joe Judge said “coaches are something to do with” Slayton and promised more information when the team had it. To be honest, that’s pretty extensive information about injuries suffered by the rookie head coach’s injuries, and it sounds outrageous.
  • Linebacker Ryan Connelly rode the bike again and did not participate. There is no news about Connelly, who hit an ACL season last year, but he has not competed since the middle of last week.
  • Undrafted free agent tight end Rysen John left the practice after taking a long pass. He did not return to exercise, and spends much of his time with an ice pack around his left hamstring.
  • Jabrill Peppers and Shane Lemieux also went into the injury tent at points during practice. Spencer Pulley also did not work in the final stages of practice.

“We had a couple of guys dealing with some cramps,” Judge said.

Quote of the day

‘I can tell you something, he can not fit in a whole pants. He has the greatest thighs I have ever seen in my life. He’s a charge. ”

– Defensive line coach Sean Spencer to get new defensive tackle Daylon Mack.

Practice notes

Most of Monday’s long practice was a slog, a fairly light practice in full pads that encompassed quite a number of individual periods, mixed with some work done at a pace barely above a passage.

That changed near the end of practice after Judge gathered his group for a bit of a “pep talk” before performing a two-minute drill to complete the workout.

‘They definitely end up with good intensity. We competed in the end, “said judge. “We have to get it where we come from one day and we start sharp.”

Exercise some highlights:

  • Rookie cornerback Darnay Holmes had some nice plays near the goal line during that two-minute drill. First, he hit a Daniel Jones pass away from Sterling Shepard. Next, he jumped a sideline and almost chose a pass meant for Golden Tate.
  • Tight end Evan Engram probably had the game of the day. In a 7-on-7 period, Engram hit safety Xavier McKinney to drag a deep ball from Jones.
  • A bit of a mixed day for Corey Coleman. He dragged in a few deep passes, but also accompanied what would have been a 15-yard late-hit penalty while blocking on a run game.
  • With Pulley out of action, draft rookie Tyler Haycraft got some extra work on center.
  • Undrafted rookie cornerback Jarren Williams, just added to the roster three weeks ago, continues to get a long look from the Giants.
  • Wide receiver Alan Bachman flashed with a dive catcher on a deep ball from Jones with rookie cornerback Christian Angulo in cover.

The final player selected in the 2020 NFL Draft, Crowder bids for a spot on the 53-man roster. He made a few notable plays in Friday night’s counterattack. Inside linebackers coach Kevin Sherrer Monday, Crowder said a “different skillset” to the position.

“Very similar scheme [at Georgia, where Crowder played] in a certain measure of what we do, so I think this has helped him where he does not come up with a complete ground zero. He has terms of knowledge and the language he is trying to interpret. He did well, “said Sherrer. ‘He still has some ways to go, some learning, some understanding, some situational awareness and things like that. He has done well for us. However, he has a different skill set than the other boys. He’s a little taller, a little taller, probably a little more athletic than a lot of the other guys. ‘

Tyke Tolbert: WR’s “fit perfectly” in the Giants’ offense

Ask wide receiver coach Tyke Tolbert if the Giants have enough playmakers at wide receiver and you get an impulsive answer.

“Yeah, that’s what I want. Weapons are one person’s opinion, but I think all these guys are NFL footballers and they’re all here for a reason. It’s up to us to train them to play their best inside. the system we possibly can, “Tolbert said Monday. ‘Do I think we have enough weapons? Yes. Everyone is always looking for the biggest, strongest, fastest man, but that does not necessarily fit the system you are running. I think these guys fit perfectly for what we run. We expect a lot from them and we will build a lot from them. ”

Net Mr. Perfect

Giants’ plate picker Graham Gano had been 6 of 6 in field goals until he missed a kick wide right on the final game of practice. No real estimate on the distance of the attempt.
