Giants training camp, 8/21: David Sills, Alex Bachman, Darnay Holmes, Javon Leake stand out in scrimmage

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – The New York Giants held their first of what are likely to be three training camp training sessions on Friday, working a variety of 11-on-11 situations for nearly 90 minutes at their Quest Diagnostics Training Center facility.

“I was happy with the way everyone came out and worked today,” said head coach Joe Judge. “You want to see how boys perform in these situations, because this is the closest simulation we can have to a game.”

Judge said the communication between his newly formed coaching staff and players “went well.”

‘I thought the coaching staff did it well. We have to remember, this is really the first time that these coaching staffs have worked together on opposite sides of the ball in this kind of situation, ”the judge said. “There’s a lot of communication as coaches that we need to work out as well.”

Quick hits

  • Statistically, a so-so day for Daniel Jones, 10 of 22 with an interception.
  • Really nice day for undrafted running back Javon Leake, who showed an explosive burst two or three times.
  • Rookie cornerback Darnay Holmes had Jones’ interception, and revealed that she worked exclusively in the locker room all day.
  • Call the good news for the various offensive line groups as bad news for the pass rushers, but the four quarterbacks (with red jerseys not allowing them to retire, of course) did not appear to be under much tension during the check.
  • Broad receivers David Sills V and Alex Bachman, training squad players a year ago, each had beautiful days.
  • Undrafted wide receiver Derrick Dillon had a few easy drops on back-to-back throws.
  • A very active Dexter Lawrence dumped Saquon Barkley on back-to-back games early in the scrimmage. Barkley did not appear appreciative, as the two exchanged a bit of comfort.

Let us now dive into a few more details.

Offensive

Here is Judge’s general assessment:

‘There were some just right, I thought they played better than not. “I thought they ended the day on a high note with some good records going down the field,” the judge said.

“For the first day of going out in a live situation of just shouting plays, running plays, I was happy with the effort today, I was happy with the urgency. There are many things we need to clean up ahead. ”

Daniel Jones’ day

Jones completed just three of his first 10 throws. However, he picked it up as the session progressed.

Judge spent much of his time behind the crime and when I asked him if he was happy with Jones’ command over the newly installed crime, he said “quite that.”

‘I stood behind the huddle the whole time, behind the mischief. The things you can not see on film are the command, you can not see on film how he is in the huddle, you can not see on film the presence that our players have on the line of ‘the control,’ said Judge.

‘I was very pleased with the tone he [Jones] put in the huddle. He does it every day in practice. but he went out there today in a competitive situation and really stepped up. ”

Who’s in the center?

Nick Gates, who bid for the start of the starting lineup, had a clean day in his work with Jones on Friday.

“He did a good job,” Jones said. “A lot of center play. I thought he did a good job. ”

David Sills V and Alex Bachman stand out

Recipients of practice group a year ago, both Sills and Bachman remained standing on Friday. Sills picked up a touchdown pass from Daniel Jones as he stepped up against James Bradberry, and perhaps took advantage of safety cramp from Jabrill Peppers. However, that was one of several fun plays by Sills.

“This man kills every day when he comes out,” Judge said. “He’s already shown us a lot of offense, he appears in the kicking game.”

“He’s a guy you can trust,” Jones said. ‘A man who is in the right place a lot of the time and can open up and make plays. He is a good player. ”

On Bachman, judge said:

“He’s productive in drills, he’s productive in team periods. It’s no surprise to see him make plays.”

Running back Javon Leake flies

On his first touch of the day, the developed free agent from Maryland took a handoff up the middle, made a quick cut on the line of the scrimmage and suddenly found himself in the secondary. It was one of at least three explosive plays for Leake, who competed to work a backup and earn a backup.

“He’s a boy who’s really coming at the moment,” Judge said. ‘He feels more comfortable within the system and the schedule. He does a good job and takes Burton’s coaching points [Burns] to the field.

‘Today is a day where he had the chance to go out and just play. He went out and just played some ball and made some plays for us. ”

Defense

Rookie cornerback Darnay Holmes made a great play when he interpreted Jones while covering Golden Tate. The pick of the fourth round seems to be a player who will play a big role in the continuation at the start of the season.

“He’s a really competitive guy, coming to work every day with a full head of steam,” Judge said. ‘He is very attentive, so I’m not surprised he’s improving day by day. I was happy with the way he played today. ”

However, after Holmes’ interpretation, he had the ball taken away by Andrew Thomas. Judge appreciated the hustle, but added “Darnay’s will be ripped for fumbling the ball.”

Other notables on defense

  • Linebacker Devante Downs, a backslider a season ago, is a player to watch. He seems to have caught the eye of these coaching staff.
  • Rough day for cornerback Grant Haley. He was beaten several times by Sills and Bachman, although he had defended one fine pass while defeating the designed free agent receiver Austin Mack.
  • Cornerback Dravon Askew-Henry had back-to-back pass breakups on throws from quarterback Cooper Rush that were intended for wide receiver Tony Brown.

Special teams

New Giants placekicker Graham Gano went 6 of 6 in field goals in full control. When those stairs at the far end of the field were away from media, it was impossible to follow distances. However, it turned out that the latter may have been 50 yards or more. Gano, incidentally, carries No. 6 for the Giants. He has traditionally no. 9 carried, but with the Giants that number belongs to punter Riley Dixon.

Sitting out

Linebacker Ryan Connelly, wide receiver Corey Coleman and safety Xavier McKinney did not participate. They rode bikes and worked on the side. “We just thought they had a really strong charge,” Judge said. “We thought it was best to just go ahead and rest her.”
