Giants training camp, 8/19: Wednesday practice report

Welcome to the club, Daniel Jones! The New York Giants quarterback on Wednesday joined the group of players who had to run laps after making mistakes. Jones and center Spencer Pulley were apparently sent off after combining to cause a false starting penalty.

Per NJ.com, running backs Sandro Platzgummer and Javon Leake also went to the Lap Club at light practice on Wednesday.

Judge praises Cody Core

The Giants officially placed Cody Core on Wednesday after he tore an Achilles tendon.

“I hate it for him,” Judge said. ‘You see how a boy’s mouth works, you know what kind of player he is, what competitor he is, how much he has invested in us. Everything we asked him to do is done 100 percent. ”

Core’s loss will hurt the Giants on special teams.

“He is one of the top players of special teams in the league,” said referee. ‘Hopefully his injury is something he can recover from at full speed. I’m looking forward to seeing this guy in the future … he’s definitely the kind of guy we want to work with. ”

Judge: Specialists peaked later in their careers

It has been known for a few days that the Giants ‘goal was to add former Carolina Panthers’ place kicker Graham Gano to the roster. That became official on Wednesday.

Gano missed last season with injuries to his left leg.

“Our doctors at the moment believe he is healthy enough that we went with him, so I’m sure,” Judge said.

Gano was unavailable to the Giants when they cut Aldrick Rosas. The Giants initially signed Chandler Catanzaro, but have since moved to Gano, a 33-year-old 10-year veteran.

‘Of course, T-Mac (special teams coach Thomas McGaughey) and Dave (Gettleman) have experience with him from back in Carolina. That goes a long way, “said the judge. “He’s a great pawn who has experience.”

Judge pointed out that placekickers often do not reach their prime years until they are in their 30s.

“I think with every specialist – kicker, punter, snapper – you really see the best ball when they get to their 30s,” Judge said. ‘They’ve had their time to develop, to understand the competition, to really understand how their body works.

‘Young boys sometimes have a little more pop in their leg, young boys. ay have a little more raw ability, but when it comes to NFL specialists, they really start around the 30s. “

Judge: “Pleasant to see” on Daniel Jones’ progress

Judge went months after he was hired to utter the name of Daniel Jones or, for that matter, the name of every Giants player. He has now been seen working Jones in some live, competitive practice situations. So, what does the quarterback coach think?

‘I see improvement every day. I see a command inside the huddle, where he is aware of not only what we are calling, but he knows the situation in which we call it, “said judge.” I see someone who understands why Jason calls the scene that he at that time and how the pieces fit, and I see a lot of confidence in his eyes as he goes to the line of scrimmage.

“He still has a long way to go to reach his potential, but he’s working on arriving every day and it’s fun to watch.”

Andrew Thomas Adapted to NFL

Andrew Thomas will be a major player for the Giants in 2020. Currently, Thomas teaches that the NFL is not the same as college.

“In high school you are fast, you are strong, you know what your mission is, you usually do well,” he said. “But at this level there’s so much technique you have to learn, so many things for the snap you have to understand before the ball even moves, I think that’s the biggest adjustment.”
