Giants pitch Pro Bowl kicker Aldrick Rosas

The New York Giants are releasing Pro Bowl kicker Aldrick Rosas just days before the start of training camp after his arrest earlier this summer, according to multiple sources.

Rosas, 25, was charged with three misdemeanors stemming from an accident that occurred on June 15 in Butte County, California. He faces charges of reckless driving on a highway, property damage from hitting and running and driving while suspended / revoked for alcohol / drug DUI.

Rosas could still face NFL discipline. The league has indicated in recent weeks that the matter remains under review.

While Rosas will be released, sophomore cornerback DeAndre Baker is expected to land on an exempt list. Baker faces four counts of armed robbery and four counts of aggravated assault with a firearm. The alleged robbery occurred during an illegal gambling game at a Miramar, Florida home with 15 to 20 occupants, a source told ESPN’s Cameron Wolfe. There was a commotion after the parties were accused of cheating with “loaded dice,” the source said.

Rosas’ problems with the law also come immediately after a tough 2019 season. Rosas made just 12 of 17 field goal attempts (70.6%). He was rehired as a restricted free agent for $ 3.3 million this offseason after the Giants used a second-round bid against him.

It has been a precipitous drop for Rosas, who reached the Pro Bowl after the 2018 season. He made 32 of 33 field goals (96.9%) that year in a breakout season. The former unrecruited big-leg kicker from southern Oregon had made it to the Giants’ active roster in 2017.

Without Rosas, the Giants are signing former Jets kicker Chandler Catanzaro for one year, a league source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Catanzaro retired last August and was released from the Jets reserve / left squad list last week.

The giant veterans are slated to perform at training camp on Tuesday.

Rosas was driving a black Chevrolet SUV on the morning of June 15 when a T-bone collision occurred. Witnesses saw Rosas driving erratically over the double yellow lines and at an estimated speed of 100 mph when a red light went through and hit a Ford truck, according to the police report.

Rosas allegedly attempted to drive from the scene of the accident before his vehicle was deactivated. She left and fled the scene on foot without shoes.

Officers went to Rosas’ house after the scene was cleared. The 2018 Pro Bowl kicker was not there, but then he stopped walking on the side of a road with his hands, legs, and bare feet covered in blood. Rosas finally received treatment for minor injuries at the Enloe Medical Center and then was admitted to the Butte County Jail.

The police report originally said that alcohol consumption was believed to be a factor. But no breathalyzer or blood test was mentioned.

None of the charges filed earlier this month reflected alcohol involvement.
