San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey is considering opting not to participate in MLB’s truncated 2020 season, depending on how the coronavirus pandemic unfolds in the next two weeks.
“I think there are still some reservations from me,” Posey said at a team practice at Oracle Park on Saturday. “I want to see how things progress here over the next two weeks. I think it would be a bit naive or foolish not to assess what is happening around you. Not just around you, but paying attention to what is happening in the country and different parts of the county. Obviously unprecedented times right now. I’ve definitely thought about it and talked a little bit with my wife. “
Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Mike Leake and Washington Nationals first baseman Ryan Zimmerman are two of the biggest names who have officially decided not to play this year.
“I am going to see what happens and I will continue to communicate with my wife and pay attention to what is happening around me here at the ballpark and what is happening in the country,” said Posey. “I would be surprised if you asked any player if they gave you a rigid answer, ‘No way, I am not going to choose not to answer.'”
