Due to Grey’s Anatomy Season 16, Andrew struggles with his mental health. He took risks with his patients and lured out to those closest to him, including Meredith Gray (Ellen Pompeo). At one point, Andrew even tried to take up his job at Gray Sloan Memorial, after accusing the patient’s aunt of human trafficking. This led to his suspension.
In the Grey’s Anatomy final, Andrew returned to the hospital and helped Meredith rescue Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.). He successfully diagnosed the cobalt poisoning of the former boss from a previous hip replacement. But instead of celebrating the win, Andrew broke down screaming, letting Meredith pick up the pieces.
Later, in the Station 19 Season 3 episode titled “Bad Guy,” Carina DeLuca (Stefania Spampinato) reveals what happened to Andrew.
“My father has bipolar me,” said Carina Maya Bishop (Danielle Savre). “And my dear baby brother has inherited it.”

As many Shondaland fans pointed out, Andrew’s diagnosis was never confirmed Grey’s Anatomy. That the throwaway line that made an important plot point on public Station 19 seemed a little strange. But then showrunner Krista Vernoff confirmed that Andrew has a bipolar I disorder.
“DeLuca is bipolar,” Vernoff told People in May 2020. “DeLuca has been a really manic state for a long time. Even though he was right about the victim of sexual trafficking, the way he behaved was in line with the personality we have known him all these years. “
She then explained what happened to Andrew in the Grey’s Anatomy Season 16 finale.
“After finally diagnosing Richard, DeLuca went from manic to depressive,” Vernoff said. “That’s what that last scene was like when he was sitting on the floor crying in a fit of despair, after watching the last several episodes nothing but loud.”

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight published in August 2020, Gianniotti opened up about Andrew’s storyline in Grey’s Anatomy Season 17. The actor revealed that his character’s bow to mental health was feeling more resolved at the end of last season. Although there were restrictions, because the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) shut down production and the 16th season was shortened by four episodes. However, Gianniotti indicated that the bow will pick up again next season.
“I think it will continue to be explored,” Gianniotti said. ‘That was a big build up of the storyline we talked about two years ago and it’s slowly moving up to this storyline for DeLuca. That I think where we end up, although it’s not exactly where we want to end up last season, there would have been a little more resolution [on DeLuca’s part] were we not shut down. ”
He added, “We’ll have to play this season.”
The actor also shared that there will be a time jump when Grey’s Anatomy Season 17 is coming back. That hopefully Andrew will be in a better mental state than in the final. But for now, fans will just have to wait and see what happens. Although Gianniotti indicated Andrew could spend the new season rehearsing his previous actions.
“I think this season will have a lot of DeLuca trying to make up for his wrongdoing, things he said, things he did because he’s unstable,” Gianniotti said. “And Meredith, try to reconcile that or not.”
