Ghislaine Maxwell secretly married to safeguard her fortune amid her legal troubles, a friend claims in a new report.
The friend believes that the hidden marriage, an explosive revelation at Maxwell’s court hearing, was probably orchestrated “to protect the money he had,” the Times UK reported.
Prosecutors say the British heiress is linked to 15 different bank accounts, some with balances of more than $ 20 million, and that she maintains other accounts in foreign countries that contain more than $ 1 million.
The accused Mrs. Jeffrey Epstein also raised $ 15 million from the sale of an unidentified residence in New York City in 2016, prosecutors said.
When the friend last saw Maxwell two years ago, Maxwell was tight-lipped about his life situation.
“I asked her where she lived and she didn’t tell me,” said the friend to the store. “She said, ‘A little bit of everywhere.'”
Another former friend of Maxwell said she was completely unaware of the secret nuptials of British high society.
“No one knew she was married,” the former friend told the store, adding that he had been in a relationship for a time with tech entrepreneur Scott Borgerson.
“I don’t know any other boy that she’s seen.”
Maxwell was arrested earlier this month in a six-count indictment accusing her of recruiting and preparing young women to be sexually abused by her and Epstein.
She was ordered held without bond on Tuesday.
