Germany’s ‘Rambo’ in custody after five-day manhunt in the Black Forest

A man nicknamed “Rambo” after disarming four policemen at gunpoint and disappearing in Germany’s Black Forest was captured after a five-day manhunt.

Yves Rausch, 31, was found Friday still hidden in the wooded hills around the small town of Oppenau in southwestern Germany, police said. More than 2,500 police officers had participated in the search for Rausch.

After receiving a tip from two witnesses, the police special forces and a sniffer dog found Rausch sitting in a bush with four pistols stretched out in front of him and an ax in his lap, deputy regional police chief Juergen Rieger said . An additional pistol was also found.

Rausch was wounded during the arrest and an officer suffered a superficial injury from the ax, Rieger said. Neither of them needed to be hospitalized.

The hunt took place last week after police were alerted to a suspicious person carrying a bow and arrow. Authorities have said Rausch initially cooperated, but then suddenly pointed a gun at officers, forcing them to surrender their service weapons. No one was injured.

During interrogation following his arrest, Rausch told investigators that the weapon with which he threatened officers was a blank pistol, police and prosecutors said in a statement. The weapon was still under investigation, according to the statement.

A judge on Saturday ordered Rausch to remain in custody pending possible theft charges for extortion and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

Rausch lost his apartment last fall and is believed to have lived in the forest for weeks, according to authorities.

He had spent time in prison for shooting a woman with a crossbow a decade ago, and last year he was found in possession of child pornography while under investigation for possession of explosives, the BBC reported.
