German watchdog launches Amazon third-party seller

German authorities on Sunday announced an investigation into Amazon, focusing on the company’s relationship with third-party sellers who use its website.

“We are currently investigating whether and how Amazon affects how retailers set prices in the market,” Andreas Mundt, president of the Federal Cartel Office, told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung every day.

Germany is the second largest market from Amazon to the United States, according to Reuters.

Mundt claimed that there had been complaints about Amazon blocking certain retailers, accusing them of winning prizes following the outbreak of coronavirus.

“Amazon should not be a price controller,” he explained, adding that the company had responded to his office’s requests for information and the responses were reviewed and investigated.

An Amazon spokeswoman defended her award-winning policy and referred all relevant customers to the company’s support team.
