Georgia to see a little impact from Hurricane Laura

The storm grew nearly 24% in power in just 24 hours to a magnitude that the National Hurricane Center called “extremely dangerous.”

Explore‘Huge storm’ awaited Laura as catastrophic Category 4

Laura had maximum sustained winds of 140 mph, as it winds about 200 miles from Lake Charles, Louisiana, and northwest at 16 mph.

However, tropical storm conditions were possible in Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee and Kentucky and perhaps even parts of Oklahoma, according to reports.

Laura is also expected to leave Alabama mostly untouched. After the storm moves north over the state, there will be potential for a few scattered thunderstorms and some flash water. The sinking air will bring some dry but extremely humid days according to WVTM 13.. But the northwest corner of Alabama could see a small chance of isolated tornadoes or strong wind gusts.

Georgia Power said Tuesday it was following the storm “round the clock” and was ready to respond if all utilities were affected.

For now, the storm is moving to the northwest and is expected to strike Wednesday night as early as Thursday near the Texas-Louisiana border as a Category 4 storm.

Thursday it is expected to be partly cloudy and hot in Atlanta, with only a 20% chance of showers. Scattered thunderstorms will return Friday and through the weekend, with temperatures well into the upper 80s.

Some forecasts said that Laura’s extra moisture would only be felt in North Georgia.
