Gboard gets ‘Advanced Voice Is Typing’ W / New Google Assistant

Since we first saw it in We Gust, Gabord is now rolling out an “enhanced voice is typing” experience featuring the new Google Assistant found on the latest Pixel phones. However, it is not working for most users.

Pixel 4 / XL, Pixel 4A, and Pixel 5 users today a “new!” Facing the banner after opening the Gboard and tapping the microphone icon. There is a special feature to help you “save time type” by giving the benefit of the assistant.

For example, you can say “clear” to delete a transcribed object instead of using the backspace key manually. It seems to be the only command available today, although “send” should be another one.

In addition to Gboard’s “Speak Now”, the new Google Assistant light bar slides from the sides of the screen before pooling together at the bottom to provide visual confirmation. The indicator in the upper-right corner works as before.

In the Goboard settings and under the Voice is typing menu, an “Extended” option appears:

Enabled advanced voice typing with voice commands provided by the assistant.

There is an option to “add punctuation when adding.” With previous experience, users had to manually say ‘period’, ‘comma,’ or ‘question / exclamation mark’. It can be made independent / enabled from the main capability. In our short test, it works fairly well.

This new option coincides with last year’s “Quick Voice Typing”, which downloads the offline flight model to your device and works in real-time.

To date, this feature is being rolled out to Pixel phones with the “new Google Assistant” and the latest Gboard Beta (version 10.0+) installed.

When the advanced voice typing UI appears, it does not work on our two devices. We’ve got luck using the new feature on just one Pixel 5, suggesting that this isn’t a perfect projection. Navigate to Settings (third screenshot above) and disable that second toggle to return to the previous experience.
