EXCLUSIVE: After taking his time figuring out where it wants to go next Tron installation to go, Disney’s sci-fi franchise seems to have new life when we hear Garth Davis is tapped to direct the picture with Jared Leto.
Davis has become better known over the years for his smaller art house films such as 2018s Mary Magdalene and his award-winning drama of 2016 Lion, which received six Oscar nominations, including for Best Picture. Tron would mark Davis’ first tent pole, and although he is not known for big-budget projects, insiders say Davis aggressively pursued the job, eventually winning over execs.
Jesse Wigutow wrote the most recent design of the script. Leto co-produces with Justin Springer and Emma Ludbrook.

The original film starring Jeff Bridges in 1982 was set within the computer program called the Grid, where a computer hacker is kidnapped and forced to participate in gladiatorial games. The film was not a hit and received mixed reviews, even though the special effects at the time were seen as game-changing. The cult that followed over the years to swell the film, as it played on cable, only helped its popularity, until Disney decided to move forward with a sequel, Tron: Legacy, in 2010, with Bridges repaid for his role and Garret Hedlund and Olivia Wilde at the franchise.
That movie went ahead with box office goals, and brought in $ 400 million worldwide, but even plans for a sequel were put off, while Disney figured out how the story would go forward. The studio eventually came up with plans for an immediate sequel Tron: Legacy, and even after Leto joined himself in 2017 and took her time to figure out next steps for this project.
Davis who signals to the project that the next installation may finally happen, but insiders still claim that a greenlight has not been given. The film is still in development, but Davis’ involvement is a push in the right direction for the future of the franchise.
