According to new research, homeowners burn a significant amount of calories each year simply by doing yard work and other DIY projects around the house.

Turns out, maintaining your lawn and garden could be the perfect way to lose weight while trapped at home during the coronavirus pandemic.

On average, homeowners burn more than 80,000 calories a year working in the garden and doing DIY chores around the house, reports the Southwest News Service.

According to a new study, many people don’t see gardening as exercise, but the amount of calories burned is enough to offset the consumption of more than 300 Big Macs.

The study, conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Draper Tools, surveyed 2,000 homeowners and found that they spend an average of 165 hours a year maintaining or fixing their homes.

Simple actions like weeding, pruning, and watering a garden can burn thousands of calories a year, provided they are done consistently. Lawn mowing can only burn more than 4,100 calories.

For serious gardeners, harvesting fruits and vegetables from their gardens not only provides them with healthy food, but also helps them burn more than 3,100 calories, according to the study.

Gardening generally requires heavy objects, such as compost bags or dirt, to be moved or transported, which helps burn more calories.

Of course, burning calories also takes time.

According to the study, homeowners spend nearly 700 minutes a year watering their gardens and more than 700 minutes mowing the lawn. Weeding takes almost 650 minutes, but it also burns more than 6,300 calories.
