If he had a choice, the Valve boss would pick Xbox Series X over PS5.
Valve Co-Founder Gabe newell It has been trapped in New Zealand since the coronavirus outbreak. When the team finished in Half-Life: Alyx, Newell took a break from home.
Soon after, the virus hit and Newell found himself essentially trapped there since March. Newell has been invited on national television to promote a concert he is offering in New Zealand for free, with the help of his friends, as a way of thanking the country for organizing them.
His last appearance was on The Project, and you can bet the show’s hosts wanted his opinion on the impending next-generation console fight between Sony and Microsoft. When asked directly which of the two consoles, PS5 or Xbox Series X, he considers the best, Newell went with Xbox without hesitation.
“Why?” asked the host. “Because it’s better!” Newell replied.
“I have no interest in that career,” he clarified. “Obviously, we do most of our development on personal computers, but of the two it would definitely go with an Xbox.”
In raw power, the Xbox Series X has an advantage over the PS5, but the Sony console has an advantage in the storage department with a custom-made SSD several GB / s faster than the X Series.
Although Newell’s opinion may be based on that fact, Microsoft’s console is more akin to a Windows machine today, making it more accessible to a PC developer like Valve.
The two companies have also rekindled their partnership in recent years, with Steam receiving first-hand day and date releases with Xbox and Microsoft Store. Microsoft even regularly promotes Steam on official Xbox broadcasts, a kindness Valve has paid for by highlighting Xbox games and events on the Steam homepage.
