The rejection came in a private meeting Tuesday after House Majority Leader Stanley Hoyer introduced a proposal to ensure the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Missouri Rules Committee Chairman Roy Blunt voted with House Republican Leader Capin McCarthy to block the House, and prevented the inaugural committee from publicly acknowledging that the next inauguration would be for Biden. Ranking Democrat of the Rules Committee, Sen. of Minnesota. Amy Klobucher voted in favor of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Hoyer.
“To the extent that Republicans are refusing to accept the election results and it would be surprising if Biden and Kamala recognize Harris as our next president and vice president,” Hoyer said in a statement. “His continued respect for President Trump’s post-election bias threatens our democracy and undermines confidence in our electoral system … Republicans are also refusing to say that President-elect Biden and Vice President -Elect Harris will be inaugurated on January 20, even if there is no serious controversy over that fact. ”
The vote comes as Republicans on Capitol Hill have repeatedly refused to recognize Biden as the next president of the United States. Hoyer told reporters, however, that he could not guess why Republicans voted against the move.
“You have to ask them, you have to ask them,” Hoyer said of whether Republicans voted against the motion because he recognized Biden as president-elect.
Blunt responded by criticizing that the Republicans would not approve of Hoyer’s proposal to recognize Biden as President-elect.
“It is not the job of the Joint Congress Committee on Inauguration Ceremony to decide who we are going to inaugurate by going beyond the electoral process. The JCCIC is facing the challenge of organizing a safe opening ceremony during a global epidemic. It will adhere to a long-standing tradition of bilateral cooperation and focus on the work at hand, Blunt said in a statement.
This marks a recent attempt by the Democratic leadership to move Biden to the White House, in which Hill hinders the Republican process.
For weeks, Hill Republicans have denied that Biden has won the presidency, with several lawmakers telling reporters they will wait until December 14 to formally vote for the Electoral College.
In fact, many Republicans have argued that Trump’s desperate attempt to overturn the election results next week will not end. Rip. Some, like Jim Jordan, are being encouraged not to accept next Monday.
When asked if Trump should confess, Jordan said bluntly: “No. There’s no way, no way, no way.”
It’s not clear whether any Senate Republicans will join their House colleagues to raise objections that will trigger a formal formal debate, although many have entertained false claims of Trump’s widespread voter fraud.
And top Senate Republicans repeatedly pointed to the end of the Dec. 14 election as they sought to give Trump room to escalate their legal battles and refused to recognize Biden as president-elect.
The story was updated on Tuesday with additional developments.
