As we continue to move to the middle of the year, rumors have started circulating about the next Google Pixel phone, which is supposed to be the “Pixel 5A”. Here’s what we learned about Google’s next phone from the Android 12 preview builds.
Android’s developer preview and beta versions have long been a source of information about what’s next for Google’s Pixel phones, the features of the upcoming quarterly Pixel feature drop. As you’d expect, Android 12 developer preview builds are no different, new Pixel phones store new details, including some Tidbitts like the Pixel 5A.
Here, we’ve added some small news about the next Pixel phone discovered by the Android 12 developer preview, and we’ll keep this location updated as more details come to light.
Google “Pixel 5A”
Just out of the box, the biggest piece of news coming out of the Android 12 developer preview period is that the mid-year phone coming from Google will actually be called “Pixel 5A”. This information belongs to the famous Google Camera Moderator and a member of the Android community cstark27 (H / T Mishal Rahman) And has been verified by our own Dylan Rouse cell.

The “Pixel 5A” moniker has long been speculated and mentioned about a year ago, at one point in an Android open source project. This new mention of the name in the Android 12 Developer Preview gives us a new confidence in Google’s branding of their upcoming Pixel device.
Model number
With the confirmation of the name “Pixel 5A”, it provides a model number for the same source device, “GR0M2.” From what we can determine, this will be the “international” model Dell number for the Pixel 5A – not the number we see on box boxes in the United States – as it appears alongside the other two international model Dell numbers.
As a side note of this model number, it is not directly related to Android 12, it has been found By Mukul Sharma This GR0M2 model number of the Pixel 5A was recently released in the US. The same regulatory agency as the FCC has been set up by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). This clearance puts the Pixel 5 one step closer to release. For comparison, the Pixel 4 received BIS approval about two months before its arrival in the US and four months before its launch in India.
Code name
While last year we referenced the leaked internal document pixel 5 with the codename “Barbet”, our Dylan Russell first found out in the Android 12 developer preview that the correct codename is “Barbet”. Notably, “unlike barbet,” “barbet” is a type of fish that better fits the theme of the pixel codename.
This improved “Barbet” codename for the Pixel 5A has since been confirmed by our APK Insight team’s investigation of version 8.2 of the Google Camera app.
