Fred Smith, Dwight Schar have been trying to sell their interest in the Washington franchise

Thursday’s statement by FedEx, the company founded by Washington minority partner Fred Smith, opposing the team’s name surprised many in the league. However, the public assault on a name that Washington owner Daniel Snyder had said would never change was not the result of an epiphany for Smith. According to a source with knowledge of the situation, Smith had been trying to get Snyder to change the name for “years.”

Smith’s dissatisfaction with the name and other issues had already brought him to a point where he, along with fellow minority owner Dwight Schar, had been actively trying to sell his pieces of equipment. However, both have been unable to find a buyer to date.

These dynamics make it even more reasonable to wonder whether, behind the scenes, Smith, Schar, and / or minority owner Robert Rothman hope that Snyder will ultimately decide to sell its majority stake in the franchise. Doing so may make it easier for Smith and Schar to find buyers. Or they may decide that they prefer to stay if someone else (such as the founder of Amazon and Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos) takes over the team.
