France registers more than 6,000 new cases of Covid-19, the highest figure since March

France recorded a daily tally of 6,111 newly confirmed coronavirus infections on Thursday, the highest level since lockdown ended and the second highest ever.

It was the largest figure since a peak of 7,578 on March 30 at the close, at the height of the epidemic.

The French Ministry of Health said the total number of confirmed infections now stood at 259,698. On Wednesday, the country registered 5,429 new infections.

The death toll from coronavirus rose from 32 to 30,576 on Tuesday. On Wednesday, no deaths were reported as hospital data due to a technical glitch.

Despite the rise in new infections – which the government says are mainly among young people, who usually show only a few symptoms – the number of people in hospital fell by 65 to a new low-lying low of 4,535 and it number of people in intensive care units fell by 29 to 381.

Since the end of July, the ICU figures have stabilized for the most part after failing from a high of 7,148 in early April.
