Former White House physician Ronny Jackson is probably the next bright red representative of the Texas congressional district after winning the Republican nomination.
Jackson beat former Republican member Josh Winegarner with 56% of the vote and 66,000 votes counted in his second primary round for the Texas 13th Congressional District.
The district covers northern Texas and part of the northern part of the state. Republican Rep. Mac Thornberry, the top Republican lawmaker on the House Armed Services Committee, has been the incumbent since 1995. He announced last September that he would not seek a 14th term.
Jackson and Winegarner’s career was a naked contest after a 15-way primary. Jackson hit Winegarner for his record as an agriculture lobbyist in Washington, DC, while Winegarner also turned to Jackson for his time in the capital. Jackson was backed by President Trump, but Winegarner had the backing of Thornberry and the deepest donors compared to his rival’s less organized campaign.
Jackson, a retired admiral in the U.S. Navy, was former President Barack Obama and Trump’s personal physician between 2013 and 2018 after joining the White House Medical Unit during the George W. Bush administration. .
Trump nominated Jackson to replace fired Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin in 2018, but the Iraq War veteran withdrew from consideration after complaints that he created a hostile work environment in the White House, lacked the administrative experience to head the embattled department of the federal government and offered very brilliant evaluations of Trump’s health.
Texas’ 13th Congressional District is one of the most conservative in the country. With a Republican Cook partisan voting rate of 33 plus, the winner is probably the next district representative in Congress.
