Former Trump doctor Ronny Jackson wins the Republican Party’s second primary round for the Texas Congressional seat

Trump had endorsed Jackson, a Texas native, while Winegarner had the support of outgoing District 13 representative Mac Thornberry, who announced last year that he would not be running for reelection. The district is very conservative and was run by Trump for more than 60 points. As a result, the Republican candidate is well positioned to keep the seat in the hands of the Republican Party in the November general election.

The president defended Jackson’s candidacy, tweeting in February: “Ronny is strong on Crime and Borders, GREAT for our military and veterans, and will protect his # 2A.”
Trump praised Jackson for his victory Tuesday, tweeting: “Congratulations to @ RonnyJackson4TX for his great victory against a tough and really good opponent. Ronny will be a fantastic congressman. He will represent the wonderful people of the Great State of Texas and the United States. Very good. Proud of you, Ronny! ”
Jackson separately tweeted that he had the opportunity to speak to the President by phone on Tuesday night, adding: “I am honored to be the Republican nominee for # TX13! I promise I will make you proud!”
Jackson withdrew from consideration of Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Veterans Affairs in 2018 on charges that he was “abusive” toward his colleagues, handled prescription pain medications, and was periodically intoxicated. Jackson denied all the charges against him, calling them “completely false and untrue.”

Jackson, a retired admiral, retired from the Navy in December 2019, shortly before running to run for the congressional seat.

During his career, Jackson, who also served as a White House physician during the Obama administration, embraced the right-wing conspiracy, promoted by Trump without evidence, that then-President Barack Obama spied on the Trump campaign, a move that angered some of the Obama Aides who had served alongside him in the White House.

In March, Jackson finished second in the 15-person GOP field, far behind Winegarner.
