Former Mexican federal police officer accused of torturing suspects

A former Mexican federal police officer who was accused of harassing suspects during an investigation has returned to power, authorities confirmed Friday, according to a Reuters report.

Carlos Gomez Arietta previously oversees police in the wake of the 2014 abduction and apparent killing of 43 student teachers from Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers College. He had been facing an arrest warrant since March.

Gomez is accused of “possible involvement” in the torture and forcible disappearance of some of the individuals questioned in the investigation. The UN human rights office has also accused the authorities of harassing dozens of people involved in the investigation.

He has previously denied the allegations of torture, Reuters reported. He resigned late last year after being identified in a video showing officers harassing a suspect.

“We hope … he can also tell where the children were and who was involved in their disappearance,” said Felipe de la Cruz, the father of the missing student teachers.

In July, investigators found a bone fragment of a student teacher. Prior to the search, the remains of only one of the student teachers were identified by authorities, the outlet said.
