Tight end David Njoku has requested an exchange from the team, his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

“David is interested in finding a new team right now,” Rosenhaus told Schefter.

Njoku, who turns 24 next Friday, was Miami’s 29th overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft. He had 56 catches for 639 yards and four touchdowns in 2018, but played in just four games last season after being left out due to a wrist injury. However, it was a healthy scratch at weeks 15 and 16.

The Browns signed Austin Hooper to a four-year, $ 42 million contract in March, making him the highest-paid tight end in a multi-year deal. The team also selected Harrison Bryant from Florida Atlantic in the fourth round of the April NFL draft.

New coach Kevin Stefanski frequently used two tight end sets while previously serving as the offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, but Njoku intends to be traded prior to the start of training camps on July 28 despite the wishes of the team to retain him, Schefter reported.

Cleveland exercised Njoku’s fifth year option in May,

“My number 1 goal is to stay healthy,” Njoku told the Browns’ team website in June. “If I can stay healthy, the sky is the limit. It is going to be special. We have all the tools here, and we have a great coach, so we are very excited to put everything together.”
