Hager’s body was found around 4 a.m. on a trail along the Grand Canyon in South Rim, Sergeant, Northern Arizona. Scottsdale Police Department spokesman Ben Host said in a statement Saturday night.
Police were searching for Hager, 37, on suspicion of murder and aggravated assault in a fatal shooting Friday in the Phoenix suburb, Hoster said.
The victim was identified by police on Saturday night as Daniel Breed, 34. The breed is owned by Tipsy Coyote Bar and Grill in Scottsdale, the Republic of Arizona said.
Earlier Saturday, Hager’s restless vehicle was found near Flagstaff in northern Arizona, police said. Flagstaff is 118 miles north of Scottsdale.
According to MLB.com, Hager was created by the Chicago White Sox in 2001, and played 83 innings in the major leagues. His career has included stents with the Boston Red Sox, Seattle Mariners, San Diego Pedres and Los Angeles Dodgers organizations.
He joined the Dodgers organization in 2009, and was initially assigned to the Minor-League Albuquerque Isotopes. The Dodgers were called up later that year and remained on the roster in 2010 before being sent back to the minor leagues.
His career record with Major League Baseball was 2-7 with a 6.40 ERA.
Hoster said investigators determined that the victim’s male voice heard gunshots when he returned to the residence Friday and that Hager left the victim’s bedroom with a handgun moments later.
“Hedger then pointed a handgun at the roommate. The roommate quickly got out of the back of the residence, and he was about to call a neighbor on 911,” Hoster said in a statement.
Responding, police said the victim was found dead in her bedroom.
Before he died, Hager was described as “armed and dangerous.”
