Forest fires in Greece force evacuations, firefighters run to stop fire


Firefighters and water-jets were fighting for a second day on Thursday to contain a major fire in southern Greece that forced evacuations and a nightly battle to save homes.

The fire service said the fire east of the southern city of Corinth was in full swing after winds increased after a pause earlier in the day, and an evacuation of one more village was ordered, the seventh since The fire broke out on Wednesday.

Corinth is located in the Peloponnese region, about 50 miles southwest of Athens.

More than 270 firefighters, three planes and six helicopters were fighting to stop the burning of multiple fronts in a fire that started in the coastal settlement of Kechries, an area with several summer houses that is popular with retirees, and spread inland.

Most of the evacuated residents were bused to nearby beaches and no injuries were reported.

The fire burned farmland, as well as pine and olive trees, and destroyed or severely damaged around 10 houses, local officials said.

Several forest fires that broke out in other parts of Greece were brought under control on Thursday, freeing forces to concentrate in the Corinth area.
