For the fourth time in 8 days, the US breaks the record for new coronavirus cases

The United States reported 67,400 new cases of coronavirus on Tuesday, a new record for reported cases in the country in a single day, according to a count by Johns Hopkins University. That is the fourth time in eight days that the United States has broken its record for new and confirmed cases.

According to Johns Hopkins, 7,400 new new coronavirus cases were reported in the country on Tuesday this week compared to Tuesday last week, when the US hit what was then a record high of 60,000 new cases:

New cases reported Tuesday are more than triple the number reported in the country a month ago: 19,800 on June 14, according to Johns Hopkins University.

The southern states of the United States are now facing an increase. Florida, a new epicenter of the pandemic, reported 15,299 new cases of coronavirus in a 24-hour period over the weekend, the newest cases reported in a state in a single day since the start of the pandemic. The previous record was 11,571 cases reported in New York on April 14, when that state was the epicenter of the outbreak in the United States.

Officials in Florida are now establishing test sites, delivering critical supplies, and assigning personnel statewide. The state agency leading the effort, the Florida Division of Emergency Management, also helps with hurricanes and other natural disasters.

“Hurricanes that work are sprints. This is a marathon,” said Jared Moskowitz, the agency’s director. He said this is the largest operation in the state’s history and has been complicated by disinformation and politics.

“When a category 5 arrives, no one disputes whether it was a category 5. No one says, ‘No, it was a category 2,'” he said. “And in this disaster, we are arguing about everything.”

In Miami-Dade County, more than 30% of all coronavirus tests tested positive Tuesday. And with the increase in hospitalizations, the Miami mayor said more setbacks may be necessary.

“There is a lot of pressure at the moment for us to close at some level,” said Miami Mayor Francis Suarez.

In the west, it’s a similar story in Los Angeles County. New cases and hospitalizations reached record levels on Tuesday.

“Red is when it is … everything goes out again. Everything. At our strictest level. And so I want to warn people that we are close to that,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti before new numbers will be announced.

The outbreak is also accelerating in South Carolina.

“We see a dramatic increase in the number of cases, and hospitals are facing a serious shortage of staff,” Senator Lindsey Graham said after hospital administrators informed her.

At least three states, Alabama, Utah, and Florida, reported a record number of coronavirus-related deaths in one day.

CDC Director Robert Redfield warns that the worst may yet to come when the coronavirus pandemic coincides with the flu season.

“I think the fall and winter of 2020 and 2021 will probably be one of the most difficult times that we experience in American public health,” he said.
