FMCSA boss to resign


The acting director of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will step down from his position at the end of the month.

FMCSA chief Jim Mullen will step down in late August, the agency confirmed.

At the end of the month, Jim Mullen will leave the department. We really appreciate Jim’s service and the work he has done for our country. Wiley Deck, currently a senior policy adviser to the Secretary and former FMCSA Director of Government Affairs, will assume the role of Deputy Administrator of FMCSA, ”A DOT spokesperson confirmed via email to CDLLife.

Mullen stepped into the role of acting manager in the fall of 2019.

During the months he served as head of the FMCSA, the agency was able to pass a long-awaited Hours of Service Final Rule. Mullen was also at the helm of the agency when the FMCSA launched its Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.

Last October, then-FMCSA manager Raymond Martinez abruptly announced that he was finally retiring by months after serving a little more than a year in his role. While in office, he prioritized making changes to Hours of Service regulations.

Prior to joining a consulting firm in 2016, Mullen served as the Executive Vice President and General Counsel for Werner Enterprises.
