The Philadelphia Flyers have signed the left wing Oskar Lindblom to a three-year contract with an annual average value (AAV) of $ 3.0M, according to the president of hockey operations and general manager Chuck Fletcher.
Lindblom, 23 (8/15/1996), was in the midst of a decisive year last season, recording 11 goals, which was tied for the team’s leadership at the time, and 18 points (11g-7a) in 30 games, when top specialists from the University of Pennsylvania diagnosed him with Ewing’s sarcoma in December. On July 2, he finished his treatments at the Abramson Cancer Center at Pennsylvania Hospital, where his medical team considered him with no evidence of cancer at this time.
“I am very excited to be a part of the Flyers for the next three seasons,” said Lindblom. “The support that the organization, the fans and the entire NHL have given me has been quite overwhelming. I am looking forward to skating again with the boys and being the professional hockey player I know I can be. I want to thank the Flyers for giving me this opportunity and I look forward to the day I come back and contribute to the team’s success. ”
Lindblom was recently named a finalist for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, which the NHL awards annually to the player who best embodies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to the game of hockey.
Throughout his treatments during the 2019-20 season, Lindblom had a constant presence alongside his teammates with his frequent visits to the games and locker room, and even skated with them during Phase 2 of the Return to the Game of the NHL.
Overall, Lindblom has recorded 30 goals and 27 assists for 57 points in 134 regular-season games of his career through parts of three NHL seasons, all with the Flyers. He arrived in North America full time in 2017 after three seasons with Brynas IF in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), where in his senior year he was named Swedish striker of the year after being second among all SHL players with 22 goals and a quarter with 47 points.
Originally from Gavle, Sweden, Lindblom was originally selected by the Flyers in the fifth round (138th overall) at the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, held in Philadelphia. He signed his first agreement with the club, a three-year entry-level contact, on May 30, 2017.
