Florida county begins issuing $ 100 fines for not wearing masks

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Could a mask demand and be fine for not wearing them on the way to Duval County?

Since the Jacksonville executive order to order masks in public and indoors where social distance is not possible, the number of cases has increased.

Some Florida city leaders said that if the public fails to comply with security mandates, orders to stay home could return.

In Miami-Dade County, an emergency order on Thursday allows a $ 100 fine for people who don’t wear masks in public and a $ 500 fine for businesses.

“So you think that should be happening here in Jacksonville?” News4Jax reporter Marilyn Parker asked.

“Absolutely, absolutely,” said George Brier.

“I think they should be worn in the right places, but I don’t think I should force people to wear a mask everywhere,” said Derrick Turner. “Basically you’re telling people to be sheep.”

Miami-Dade County has much more positive cases than Duval County, but enforcement could still be a possibility.

Mayor Lenny Curry has said in the past that the city will not start fining people for not wearing masks.

“What would you think if that happened here?” Parker asked.

“It would be nice with that,” said Artem Moiseyenkov. “I don’t think it’s a bad idea.”

“With this mask you can reduce the probability of contracting the virus. So if they are OK, I don’t know how it will work, but I think it will be useful, ”said Darien Rottmann.

For those who don’t have the money to pay the fine, the Miami-Dade Police Department has created a diversion program for people to do community service hours.

“People tend not to do the right thing unless they have some kind of incentive to do the right thing,” said Moiseyenkov. “So the $ 100 would probably be a good incentive.”

“I don’t know about the fine. I think it would be common sense for people to use it, considering the virus and its severity, “said another person.

In the past week, major retailers began demanding masks inside their stores.

Retail experts said that while it is difficult to enforce the rules, increasing cases does not give them a choice.

“When you force people and fines them, I think you are creating a law for people to break,” Turner said.

The Florida Department of Health reported more than 337,500 cases Saturday. Although cases are much higher in South Florida, cases are on the rise in Duval County.

While there are mixed criticisms of fulfilling the mask’s mandate, most of the people News4Jax spoke to said they hope the spread will slow down soon.
