Florida counties impose curfews as coronavirus cases increase

Officials in Miami announced a curfew at 8 p.m. in South Beach on Friday as Florida topped 10,000 new cases daily for the tenth time. The authorities hope that the curfew will decrease the holidays, one of the suspicious behaviors of feeding the coronavirus‘rapid spread.

A curfew was also announced in Broward County.

“We are not going to completely close the table,” said Dr. Aileen Marty, an infectious disease specialist, who warned that Miami-Dade County is approaching a turning point.

The intensive care units in eight of the 25 county hospitals are full, he said.

But he cautiously expressed hope that the numbers could be stabilizing. “We hope against hope that people get the message, that they are changing their behavior,” he said. “If we don’t see that by Monday, Tuesday, yes, we may have to enact new measures.”

The county has announced a new $ 100 fine for violating its mask command. Facial coverage is still one of the simplest ways to stop the spread, but also one of the most controversial.

On Friday, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp defended his lawsuit against the Atlanta city mask mandate.

“I agree that people need to wear a mask,” he said. “I don’t think a mandate is required for people to do the right thing.”

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms reacted to Kemp’s demand on “CBS This Morning”.

“It is very clear that the governor is putting politics on the people,” Bottoms said. “And we will have to fight the governor about this in court.”

There is also debate about when to reopen schools. In Utah, a meeting on reopening schools had to be suspended, after people filled the room and most ignored the safety guidelines.

“We are supposed to physically distance ourselves, wear masks,” said an official at the meeting, booing out of the crowd.

In California, public schools must meet the strict guidelines set by Governor Gavin Newsom on Friday before they can reopen with students on campus.

In Texas, where COVID-19 cases also continue to rise, COVID-19 survivor Enrique Carillo said he learned his lesson.

“I was dating, living life as if it didn’t even exist, and I ended up understanding it, and now I’m more responsible,” he said.
