Heavy flooding on the Greek island of Crete damaged roads, flooded hundreds of homes and turned cars into seas.
The worst damage occurred in small towns and villages east of the island’s capital, Iraklio, where schools were closed and residents were advised to stay indoors, officials said Tuesday.

In the most affected areas, mud water flowed into the towns, dragging cars and debris, prompting some residents to take refuge on the roofs of their homes.
This is the third time in less than a month that the area has been flooded.
Heavy rains are expected to continue till Thursday.

No injuries were reported, but regional government officials said a nationwide lockdown since Saturday had damaged the island’s road network, along with homes and businesses.
