Five countries want Apple to pay consumers more money to liquidate #Batterygate

Earlier this year, a virtual hearing was held through Zoom, allowing federal district judge Edward J. Davila to give preliminary approval to a settlement between Apple and several plaintiffs who were members of a class action lawsuit against Apple. What Apple did, as you may recall, was to add a feature to certain iPhone models in iOS 10.2.1 without the knowledge or permission of these iPhone users. After installing iOS 10.2.1, Apple had the ability to remotely speed up the CPU on certain versions of their phone.

Five countries seek 60 euros from Apple for each person affected by #batterygate

Before the release of iOS 10.2.1, some iPhone users were complaining that their phones were crashing and rebooting after handling complex tasks. Apple was accused of planned obsolescence, in effect creating these models with a limited life that forced owners to buy new iPhones. But what really happened was that the batteries in the crashing iPhone units were too weak and Apple thought that by throttling the CPU these batteries could hold up better.

Apple finally rolled back in December 2017, apologizing for the trick. CEO Tim Cook said Apple would never do anything to shorten the life of its products. and offered $ 50 or 63% off the price of a battery replacement on the iPhone 6 line, the iPhone 6s line and the iPhone SE. That brought the price of replacing those models’ batteries to $ 29 and made it almost impossible to schedule a Genius Bar appointment for months. Apple estimated that it would replace one to two million iPhone batteries and ended up performing the transplant operation approximately 11 million times during 2018.
Apple offered to pay each class member $ 25 (even as attorneys raise a total of $ 93 for their wisdom). A hearing will be held in December so that the judge can issue a final ruling on the settlement. According to the Dutch publication iCulture, five European consumer groups are also participating in the event. They demand compensation from Apple and say they want the company to pay each customer affected by the acceleration of 60 euros (equivalent to $ 67.47 at the current exchange rate).

The five European consumer groups mentioned above represent countries such as Spain, Portugal, Italy and Brazil. The latter country is a member of the group even though it is not European. After the translation, iCulture says: “The plan is to make Apple pay 60 euros to iPhone users who feel cheated because Apple is said to be ‘planned obsolescence’.” It seems that European consumer groups decided to get involved after the French government settled with Apple in February; The technology giant paid the country 25 million euros, equivalent to $ 27 million.

If something good came out of this, it’s the inclusion of the Battery Health feature on the iPhone. Go Configurations > Battery > Battery status. The maximum capacity percentage will tell you how much battery capacity is left in your iPhone’s battery compared to the 100% reading that appears when the component is new. For example, after five months with the iPhone 11 Pro Max, the maximum battery capacity of 3969 mAh is 98%.

On the Battery Status page, you can enable or disable optimized battery charging. This feature uses artificial intelligence to learn when you normally turn off your iPhone from the charger every morning. To extend battery life, it will charge 80% and stop. Then the phone will calculate when it can start charging again so that it reaches 100% exactly when you generally disconnect the device every day. For example, if you normally unplug the charger at 9 am, the battery could stop charging at 7 am and charge 100% for the next two hours. In this way, the battery does not fully charge at 8 am and the slow charge for the next hour remains at 100%. Slow charging can reduce the life of a battery over time. When you use an optimized charge, when you connect the phone to a power outlet, you will see an estimated time when the battery will reach 100%. If you need to charge the device sooner, touch the “Charge now” button to disable the optimized charging function.
