Fitbit Sense will add ‘expected’ ECG in 2020

While Google is holding back the company’s acquisition, Fitbit launched a slew of new hardware this week. Included in the lineup is the Fitbit Sense, an advanced smartwatch for health tracking complete with ECG support. In the US, that feature will work before the end of the year.

With yesterday’s Fitbit Sense announcement, the company pushed its ECG feature pretty heavily. With good reason too, because there are only a few other smartwatches that need the hardware for that feature. Unfortunately, Fitbit has not yet been approved by the FDA to enable this ECG feature in the United States. That may soon change.

Fitbit VP Larry Yang spoke to Probably on the subject this week, saying that Fitbit is currently in “definitive review” with the FDA. He further said that clearance in both the US and the EU should be provided by “this side of the holiday.”

Getting cleared for ECG has proved a daunting task for others in the past. Samsung, for example, has ECG functionality on its Galaxy Watch Active 2 and now its Galaxy Watch 3, but despite the two-year lead, Samsung has not yet managed clearance in the US, only Korea. That only left the Apple Watch as an FDA-approved smartwatch with ECG in the US, but even Apple had to wait a few months after launching the watch.

So, if you pre-ordered a Fitbit Sense and are looking forward to ECG, it will surely be nice to know that the feature is available before the year is done.
