NEW YORK (AP) – The New York Film Critics Circle on Friday voted Kelly Richard’s western legend “First Guy” the best film of 2020, while also honoring Spike Lee and art-house distributor Kino Lorber for their roles. The movie year was deeply shattered by the epidemic
The film critics, who collected virtually, gave its top award to “The First Guy”, a delicate tale of friendship and capitalism in the Oregon Territory in the mid-1800s.. Richard’s film was released in theaters in March, a few days before the launch of Covid-19, which was forced to close nationwide, but it has become the most critically acclaimed film of the year. The Associated Press has also named his number one film “First Guy”.
Critics also awarded Maria Bacalova for Best Actress in the “Borat Subsequent Movie Film” and Chadwick Boseman for Best Supporting Actor for her final performance in the August Wilson adaptation of “Maa Reini Black Bottom”. Boseman died in Ose Gust.
Best Actor went to Delroy Lindo for his role as a Vietnam War veteran In Spike Lee’s “The Five Bloods”. Best Actress was given to Sydney Flanagan, who plays a Pennsylvania teenager who travels to New York for a “never, never, always” abortion. Eliza Hitman, who wrote and directed “Never Rarely Sometimes” won the best screenplay. Chloe Zhao, the filmmaker of “Nomadland”, became the best director.
Spike Lee released two features in 2020 – “The Five Bloods” and “David Byrne American Utopia” – but was given a special award for the three-minute short opportunity he presented on Instagram: “New York, New York.” A short documentary tribute to his hometown, created during the first wave of the epidemic.
Another special objective of the group to create a virtual cinema service key marquee went to Kino Lorber, which is distributed to independent theaters closed by Covid-19. Critics have made it clear that the honor is for a service that “was created to support movie theaters, not destroy them.”
The New York Film Critics Circle Awards are usually part of a critics’ honor that can be influenced by the occasional awards season. Such awards are usually drumbeat at this time of year, but a little more general about this year’s awards season.. Many Scores and Golden Globes, as well as many other award shows, were postponed for about two months.
Other NYFCC choices include: “Time” for Best Non-Fiction Film; “Backraw” for Best Foreign Language Film; “Forty years old version” for the best first film; Best Wolf Curse for the animated film; And the five-film anthology “Small X” for best cinematography.
