Fireworks-loving Berliners bring the new year with a bang, followed by panic and sirens | Germany

Banning the spread of fireworks in most of their city, some Berliners instead tried to launch them from their homes on New Year’s Eve, causing dozens of fires to break out in the German capital.

Six minutes after midnight, the Berlin Fire Service was called to 18 fires, followed by more. Initially, no one was seriously injured.

Berlin noise makers usually take to the streets to light up the sky with fireworks on New Year’s Eve but officials banned their use in more than 50 zones of the capital to discourage crowds.

Germany also banned the sale of fireworks, which lasted until December 31, closing only the necessary shops until at least January 10 to suppress the new coronavirus.

After the epidemic went better than many of its neighbors in the early stages of last year, there has been an increase in cases and casualties linked to Kovid-19 in Germany. A record 1,129 new cases were reported daily on Wednesday.
