Firefox for Android is redesigned with the v79 update

For a while now, Firefox has been working on a complete redesign for its Android browser known as “Fenix”. The updated browser offers many changes for the better, but it also freezes Mozilla extension support.

Firefox’s stable channel on the Play Store jumps from v68 to v79 with this update, which essentially includes a year of one-time updates. The updated version uses the same codebase as the beta versions of Firefox on Android, in addition to stopping the redesigned user interface. All elements have a more modern design and some nice changes in quality of life. For example, the address bar can now be moved to the bottom of the screen, a more convenient location for many users.

The official changelog for this update also details everything else that is new.

There are a lot of good things here, but the only big downside is the extension bracket. How Android Police points out, this feature gets considerable degradation. Where Firefox v68 supports thousands of extensions, v79 only starts with a handful, which are listed below. On the plus side, this should be fixed over time as developers can update their extensions / plugins.

  • Origin of uBlock
  • Dark reader
  • HTTPS everywhere
  • Privacy Badger
  • NoScript Security Suite
  • Decentraleyes
  • Search by image
  • High definition YouTube
  • Privacy possum

It’s also worth noting that this Firefox redesign is not yet available to all Android users. How TechDows Notes, only a few regions are supported so far: SA, UA, NZ, BG, NO, PH. Fortunately, you can download the update if you feel impatient.
