Fire sets in Portland’s Multnomah Building during unrest, rioting


Portland experienced more unrest Wednesday after a fire broke out in the city’s Multnomah Building before the police department declared another riot.

Police took to Twitter to explain the riot “after people vandalized, several times smashing windows on the first floor with rocks and burning materials in an office.”

The department retweeted a video posted by Hannah Ray Lambert, a reporter with KOIN News, who filmed a small fire with a crowd in the background singing, ‘What did you see? Saw s – t not! ‘

Portland police confirmed the fire to Fox News. Lambert reported that Protestants later clashed with police.

The Oregonian reported that Tuesday marked the 83rd night of protests in the city and described the Multnomah building as the provincial government house. The paper said the protest was initially peaceful.

On Monday night, authorities said people were marching to the police union building and trying to break into the facility. No arrests were made during Monday night’s protest and authorities said most of the crowd had dispersed by Tuesday morning.

The audience gathered Tuesday at about 8 p.m. in Colonel Park in southeast Portland and about an hour later, about 200 marched to sing the Multnomah Building, “says her name, Brionna Taylor,” KPTV.com reported.

The death of Taylor, a 26-year-old African-American woman in Louisville, Ky., Has drawn national attention amid the debate over police use of violence against blacks and other minorities.

Taylor was shot several times when police entered her home on a “no-knock” order. Her friend, Kenneth Walker, fired at police, allegedly punching one officer in the leg.

Walker has claimed he fired his weapon because he thought the apartment was robbed. The initial charge of attempted murder for which he was behind was later dropped, WDRB reported.
