Sony unveiled this week’s PS5 showcase event in a huge, surprising way, announcing the final Fantasy XVI, the next major installment in the storytelling Japanese RPG franchise. The released trailer showcases the game’s fantasy elements and combat, and it looks like it’ll just be the only title to come.
You will play as Joshua’s bodyguard, the son of the Archduke of the region who decides the game. There seems to be some kind of hatred by grabbing the surrounding land, with it it brings all sorts of dangers. The fight was shown, with much applause to both Final Fantasy XV and the recent Final Fantasy VII remake, which was released on PS4 earlier this year.
The “fantasy Nancy” in this particular final fantasy seems to be inspired by something like Game Th F Thrones, which means it looks quite different from the series’ past games. Some Fans have also noticed similarities Square’s PlayStation 1-era RPG, Vagrant Story. The trailer also has a bit of one fight after another – it remains to be seen what the FF XVI’s party system will look like.
You can watch the trailer above. Square Enix notes that it is captured on PC hardware, but built to emulate the PS5 experience.
Square Enix shared some additional details about Final Fantasy XVI in a PlayStation blog post. The game is being directed by Hiroshi Takai, who previously worked on the romance saga and The Last Remnant, while Naoki Yoshida, the director of Final Fantasy XIV, will serve as the producer of XVI.
The aforementioned Final Fantasy XV marks the first new mainline installment in the series since its inception in early 2016, but the series has seen several interim releases. The Final Fantasy VII remake launched on the PS4 earlier this year, and follow-up games are in the works.
The series’ MMO entry, Final Fantasy XIV, has also received an ongoing stream of content. Its major ShadowBringers expansion resumed in July 2019, and since then it has received numerous updates, the most recent of which – Patch 5.3 – came out last month.
No release date for Final Fantasy XVI has been shared, but the game is set to release in 2021. Sony has announced that the game will be a special console on the PS5, suggesting that it will not come on the Xbox Series X or Series S.
