FedEx freight jet makes emergency landing in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES – A FedEx cargo ship made an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport before flying with sparks Wednesday morning as the engine ran under its left flank along the runway.

One of the two crew members on board was taken to a hospital for treatment of a non-life-threatening leg injuries reportedly sustained while exiting the plane, said Margaret Stewart, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The crew of FedEx Flight 1026, a Boeing 767, could not extend the left landing tower before arriving at a Newark Liberty International Airport flight at 4:50 a.m., said Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.

The FAA will investigate.

FedEx said in a statement that business executives “are working with researchers to fully understand the issue.”
