Samsung’s 5G-enabled Galaxy Z Flip variant has never been a huge question mark, following in the footsteps of a 4G LTE model only released in February with an identical design and very similar specs. For quite a long time, we assumed the spec sheet would prove to be virtually unchanged apart from the connectivity section, but a benchmark was revealed prior to launch a major processor upgrade a couple of weeks ago.
In case that also makes you expect a change in appearance, yesterday’s Tenaa certification and Today’s 360-degree “evleak” should remove all doubt. On the outside, the Galaxy Z Flip 5G is essentially indistinguishable from its predecessor, with the same trailer-centric punch, very slim display bezels, dual rear-facing cameras, and a small cover display.
The original Galaxy Z Flip, of course, was available in the Mirror Black, Mirror Purple, and Mirror Gold flavors, neither of which matched the Galaxy S20 or Galaxy Watch Active 2 series perfectly. This basically proves Samsung is taking its foldable smartphones more seriously rather than treating them as wacky experiments that are unlikely to enter the mainstream any time soon.
Of course, that doesn’t mean that the Galaxy Z Flip 5G will be very accessible to the masses. After all, the first edition is still pretty prohibitively priced at $ 1,380 unlocked, and with the addition of 5G support (for three of America’s four largest carriers) and an overclocked Snapdragon 865 processor that replaces the Snapdragon 855+ SoC, the upgraded device is guaranteed to cost at least $ 1,500 or so.
Unlike Galaxy Watch 3, Z Flip 5G is expected to break the cover alongside the Galaxy Note 20, Note 20 Ultra, and Galaxy Fold 2 in an unpacked virtual event on August 5, though actual sales may not start very soon from then or keep up with demand for a long time.
