FDA Recalls Additional Hand Sanitizers, Over 75 Products Now Listed :: WRAL.com


The Food and Drug Administration has updated the list of recalled disinfectants and now includes more than 75 products.

Recalled products indicate on packages that they contain ethanol (also known as ethyl alcohol) but have tested positive for methanol contamination.

According to the FDA recall notice, “Methanol, or wood alcohol, is a substance that can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested and can be fatal when ingested. The agency is aware that adults and children ingest hand sanitizers. contaminated with methanol that have led to recent adverse events such as blindness, hospitalizations and death. “

The FDA began warning consumers about methanol hand sanitizers in late June and again updated the list with products recalled on July 2 and 8, 2020. The most recent updates to the list include added products. on July 10, 14, 15 and 15. 21 2020.

“Consumers who have been exposed to methanol-containing hand sanitizers and experience symptoms should seek immediate treatment for the potential reversal of the toxic effects of methanol poisoning.
