SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – FBI agents arrested Puerto Rico Rep. On Monday. María Milagros Charbonier and three other people have been arrested, a spokeswoman for the pro-statehood New Progressive Party said.
Raúl Colón, a spokeswoman for the president of the House of Representatives of Puerto Rico, told The Associated Press that an adviser to Charbonier had informed the president of the arrest. No further details were immediately available.
FBI spokeswoman Limary Cruz told the AP that four people had been arrested but said she could not release more details. The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced an upcoming press conference on a case of public corruption.
Charbonier recently said the FBI interviewed her and seized her phone.
She is one of Puerto Rico’s most conservative and religious legislators. She has served as a representative since her 2012 election, but was just lost in Sunday’s primaries. Charbonier also previously served as secretary general of the New Progressive Party.
