Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert, said this week that wearing glasses or an eye protector in addition to a face mask would provide more complete protection against the coronavirus, according to a report.
“Theoretically you should protect all mucous surfaces [eyes, nose, mouth]So if you have glasses or an eye protector, you should wear it, ”he said in an interview with ABC News on Instagram on Wednesday.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention already recommend wearing a face mask that covers the nose and mouth in public, but the virus can also enter through the eyes.
Fauci recommended glasses in addition to a mask for those who want “perfect protection” from the COVID-19, but admitted that it is not “universally recommended.”
He added that one of the reasons why glasses have not been recommended yet is “it’s so easy for people to just make a mask out of cloth.”
Before the fall, Fauci said he encourages people to get a flu shot and hopes that the face masks will protect people from the flu and the coronavirus, ABC reported.
Not everyone responded favorably on social media to the idea of adding glasses to face masks. Some commented that the next step would be hazardous material suits or living inside a bubble, according to Market Watch.
