George RR Martin, author of the book series that became HBO’s Game of Thrones, escaped from an incarceration fate alongside an acid lake on a volcanic island in New Zealand.
This is not a twist to the plot of one of Martin’s books. It goes back to a promise the writer made in early 2019 to have the long-awaited next installment in the A Song of Ice and Fire series made and available by this date in 2020.
Actually, Martin reported in March that he is still disconnecting from The Winds of Winter..
Martin was supposed to come to New Zealand to attend the Worldcon science fiction convention this month. This is what he wrote in a blog update on May 21, 2019:
As for finishing my book … I’m afraid New Zealand would be too distracting. Better leave me here in Westeros for the nonce. But I’m telling you this: If I don’t have The Winds of Winter on hand when I get to New Zealand to travel to Worldcon, you have my formal written permission here to incarcerate me in a little cabin on White Island, overlooking that sulfuric lake. acidic, until finished. As long as the acid fumes don’t ruin my old DOS word processor, I’ll be fine.
Based on this, we can’t really jail Martin on White Island, home to an active stratovolcano with an acidic lake in its crater. Martin didn’t actually make it to New Zealand since Worldcon in person was canceled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. The convention has been changed to a virtual online format.
The details of the promise have not stopped some fans from wanting to keep it. A fan issued an arrest warrant via Twitter, but the conditions of her capture seem quite humane.
The lack of a Winds of Winter manuscript was also the perfect occasion to drop some prison-related memes.
If we have learned anything from the book’s long delay, it is that Martin is not afraid to take his time. Even the self-imposed threat of acidic waters may not be enough to compel it to end.
Martin will act as the toastmaster for the virtual Worldcon and participate in a couple of panels. That means there is still time for me to deliver some positive news about The Winds of Winter. At this point, I will take any hint of hope that I can get.
