“The mayor, Bill de Blasio, must immediately recall all police officers who were fired without justification. They were fired. I think this is part of ‘defending the police’ by the Democrats,” Trump said in a news release on the White House. “They should hire the nicest backs of New York. You have some incredible cops doing specific jobs that no one else can do, in fact, when it comes to terrorism and other things.”
Facts first: The president seems to be referring to two groups of New York City police officers who were not fired – potential students of police academy, whose future jobs were eliminated before they fought the force and the NYPD’s anti-crime unit, whose officers were all re-assigned to other offices within the police department.
A NYPD spokesman told CNN on Wednesday that the department “did not fire any group of officers.”
That by the logic of the president, eliminating potential, future jobs and redistributing tasks equals being fired.
In recent months, Trump has become accustomed to calling for a return to law and order in cities with Democrats, after acts of civil unrest, peaceful protest and, at times, violence caused by the death of George Floyd in the hands of Minneapolis police officers.
Coming under pressure from thousands of constituencies calling for police defense and a dire pandemic-related budget deficit, New York City cut the NYPD’s fiscal year 2021 budget in June by $ 1 billion.
As part of the cuts, the budget could add two new police classes instead of four, canceling the planned hiring of about 1,163 new officials.
But those classes had not yet begun, meaning there were not necessarily cadets enrolled in ongoing training courses who were told they had been fired, as Trump suggested.
Shea said when he announced the disbandment that the redevelopments would close one of the last chapters of stop-and-fresh – the controversial police practice involved both uniformed and official dressmakers who temporarily detain, interrogate and search residents, who were overwhelming were Black as Latino.
Trump has held conflicting views on stop-and-go.
