A post from Donald Trump’s official Facebook account purports to show violence in the US, but is in fact an event in another country.
The ad shows an image of Trump in a calm environment speaking to police officers side by side with a security officer surrounded by protesters, saying: “Public safety versus chaos and violence.”
However, the image is a photo from a pro-democracy protest in Ukraine in 2014.
Facebook told the BBC that they will not take any action against the post, but did not comment further.
What does the ad show?
The publication says “Evangelicals for Trump are ready to help reelect President Donald J. Trump.”
In the image on the right, the officer wears a badge on his shoulder.
However, it is an unrecognizable insignia like the one worn by the United States police: it is a Coptic cross seen in countries that practice Orthodox Christianity.
Using a reverse image search shows that the image is actually from Ukraine and was first published in 2014, during the revolution that toppled the government.
The security officer in the photo, in fact, is not an American police officer. That badge was worn by members of the “Internal Troops of Ukraine,” a now-disbanded section of the national army that also assisted with the police.
The image is also on the Wikipedia page about the 2014 Ukrainian Revolution, and says it shows events in February 2014 when security officials clashed with anti-government protesters.
The photo above in the ad was picked up by former Hillary Clinton staff member Jesse Lehrich in a widely shared tweet.
Who has seen it?
President Trump’s Facebook page has more than 30 million followers.
The images appear to have been taken by the “Evangelicals for Trump” campaign group and have primarily reached users in Florida and Texas over the age of 55, according to Facebook estimates.
Social media companies Facebook and Twitter have taken steps in recent months to tag posts by public officials.
Facebook has begun tagging posts on the pages of the president and Joe Biden, the Democratic Party candidate for president in the November election, with links to official information.
We have asked for a response from Mr. Trump’s campaign team.
