After releasing a dark mode for its desktop interface, Facebook is reportedly testing a dark mode for its mobile apps as well. It’s only available to “a small percentage of users globally right now,” according to SocialMedia Today.
Facebook introduced a dark mode as part of its desktop redesign last month.
Users who have the new dark mode on mobile devices tweeted screenshots of how it looks:
It’s a bit surprising that Facebook took so long to implement a mobile dark mode; Its Instagram and WhatsApp applications already have dark mode, just like Facebook Messenger. Twitter has had a night mode version for its Android and iOS apps for some time, and Google even released a dark mode for its app earlier this year.
Low light and dark mode varieties, which allow users to change the background color of an application window to black, are popular not only because they make applications easier for some users to see and are slightly more aesthetically pleasing, but because most dark mode versions can also help preserve a device’s battery life.
We reached out to Facebook for more information on when dark mode may be available in their apps for all users and will be updated when we receive a response.
