F1 records first positive tests for coronavirus since season resumed

Formula One has recorded its first positive tests for coronavirus since it returned to racing in early July.

F1 is set for its third race of the season this weekend, the Hungarian Grand Prix in Budapest. It will be the third race in three weeks, with drivers, teams and other personnel adhering to strict protocols and social bubbles.

The Austrian Red Bull Ring organized two races, on July 5 and 12, to start the 2020 season.

F1 has conducted nearly 14,000 coronavirus tests since this cycle of events began, and posted two positives on Friday. Those in rotation have to be tested once every four days in order to continue entering the paddock.

The two people who tested positive were not present in Austria during their first two races. Both have been withdrawn from operations and isolated, and the people with whom they have been in contact have been tracked down and isolated. No further details have been released.

Results are not expected to hamper the Hungarian Grand Prix this weekend.

F1 racing chief Ross Brawn said he was surprised the championship didn’t have a positive test for 14 days and said it was wrong to wait another weekend without one.

Preparations are in place to ensure that positive evidence does not derail upcoming events. The March Australian Grand Prix was canceled after a McLaren team member tested positive and the team withdrew from the event.

The F1 season schedule currently consists of 10 races, although F1 expects to add at least five more events in the coming weeks.
