Should the Boston Celtics try to do as little as possible in the 2020 NBA Draft?
ESPN’s Jonathan Givni presented a trade proposal last week, in which the Celtics would move forward in the draft by changing their first three rounds of selections for the first three Troy pistons. Boston currently owns the No. 14, 26 and 30 overall picks, and Detroit is the seventh pick.
Given believes the young Celtics will benefit more from an effect player joining the roster, such as the arrival of a trio of rucksacks, which will go a long way in earning significant playing time.
“Boston has 14 players under contract next season, plus two players on two-way contracts, Taco Fall and Tremont Waters, who will push for a full-time roster,” Giovanni wrote. “Draft-and-stash options, Alexei Pokusevsky and Leandro Bolmaro, are expected to leave the board at the end of the first round.
“With this, the Celtics should consider moving their three picks to the top 10 and finding a player who can break their rotation next season. Iowa State’s Tyres Halliburton and USC’s Onyaka Okongwu will appeal to Boston as a skilled, versatile future. Obi Toppin, Danny Avadija and Isaac Okoro will also be a solid fit with the team culture and roster composition.
Givo believes Detroit will brighten his future by filling a young talent with the hope of evolving into a star.
“For Detroit next season with just two players under contract (Black Griffin and Sequoia Doumbua), this is a chance to fill the roster with young talent,” Giovanni said. “History says the draft is full of uncertainties and it is better for teams to swing as much as possible in the first round. Every year comes as a surprise, when the top-20 prospects slip to the bottom of the first round, and having multiple picks will allow the Pistons to take a risk-strategy focused on high-trend players. “
Celtics’ current primary focus is to extend its investment in NBA playoffs as long as possible. They lead the Toronto Raptors 1-0 in their second round series.
However, the NBA draft will be held on October 16, and team officials are undoubtedly plotting their way to the big day.
